WASTE BATTERIES & ACCUMULATORS REGULATIONS 2009
The Waste Batteries & Accumulators Regulations 2009
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has tasked the Office for Product Safety and Standards with overseeing compliance regarding industrial and automotive batteries.
The Waste Batteries & Accumulators Regulations 2009 outline specific protocols for managing waste batteries, mandating their proper treatment rather than disposal through regular waste channels. These regulations cover the collection, treatment, recycling, and disposal procedures for all types of batteries
As a registered producer of automotive batteries, you are required to publicly provide details on how end users/final holders can request the collection of waste batteries. This information should be easily accessible to bring it to the attention of end users/final holders. It’s recommended that this information is prominently displayed on your company’s website. If your company does not have a website, alternative methods of communication can be discussed to ensure compliance with these regulations.
Automotive batteries
As a producer of automotive batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, we are obliged to collect, free of charge and within a reasonable time, waste automotive batteries for treatment and recycling from final holders e.g. garages, scrap yards, end-of-life vehicle Authorized Treatment Facilities, Civic Amenity Sites, etc. We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new automotive batteries on the market.
If you require us to take back any automotive batteries, please contact us. We will agree the necessary arrangements for the collection, proper treatment and recycling of the waste automotive batteries.
Please find overleaf some suggested wording for producers to fulfill their obligations under Regulation 36 (for automotive batteries).
